What's wrong with being fat?

Someone recently asked me, "What's wrong with being fat?" The answer I came up with - because of how society treats and views fat people - just doesn't add up to me anymore.
I keep thinking of her question, why people with anorexia are so afraid to be fat. Society? The media? The fact you see the beautiful, thin people on every billboard, in every television show and plastered across this country.
Anorexia plasters you. It nails you down and sucks out your life, filling it with anxiety and a desire for perfection that you can never meet. As I (or anyone with anorexia) look at our thin, plastered down bodies, may be we should think - There's nothing wrong with being fat. Most of the fat people I know are living their lives, not counting calories or fighting this demon.
I don't know the answer to this person's question, but maybe it's good I'm now asking it.

This is a really good question. I have wondered myself why I was so terrified of being "fat" when I honestly believe that people come in all shapes sizes and colors and everyone should be accepted for their hearts and minds, not judged on appearance. I feel like such a hypocrite! I have told kids that " it's what is on the inside that counts" but then all I count is calories!! I know anorexia is not about vanity but this horrid fear of fat has to be questioned. Thanks.

i'm totally on board with this one! "normal" people don't obsess about the eating disorder aspect of how am i going to control my anxiety today... by diverting my attention to calorie counting, how many miles i have to run, etc. it's NOT about the freaking food it's all about anxiety and our way to "control" things ughhh. thanks for writing this it helped me to set my day in motion that I CAN EAT IF I WANT TO because i was feeling a little tied to ed this morning when i woke up... but blogging always seems to release the pressure and quiet ed down... amazing how that works ha.

I've been trying to leave a comment on your blog "What's wrong with being fat," but am having problems for some reason. No doubt something I'm doing. Anyway, what I wanted to say is:
Fat seems to represent a total lack of self-control and what's the most important thing for an anorexic? Control. Fat people represent what we fear the most.
